How to hire a Wedding DJ

Hiring a wedding dj is one of the most important decisions you will make for your wedding. It
becomes even more important when you consider that your guests will remember the entertainment
at your wedding more than what they ate for dinner for years to come. This is not the component of
your wedding where you want to cut corners. Make sure you allocate enough money in your budget
to hire a high quality professional wedding dj. All djs are not the same, and here are some things to
looks for when hiring a dj.

PRICING TRANSPARENCY –  When you call a dj service they should be able to give you an idea of
what the price will be over the phone after talking to you for five or ten minutes. Some companies will
even list their price on their website. This is how Music Express wedding dj handles their pricing (it is
right on the website), and it is the most transparent practice. This allows the bride or groom to shop
without any pressure.

Many companies will tell you that they can’t give you a price on the phone. BEWARE of these
companies! They are usually trying to get you into their office so they can size you up and charge
you a higher price through high pressure sales. The best practice for wedding djs is to be
forthcoming with prices on their website, on the phone, and in person. Also, the prices should be the
same for clients with similar needs. If many different customers are calling with the same criteria, then
the price should be consistent for each quote.

HOW MANY HOURS WILL YOU SPEND PLANNING FOR OUR WEDDING? – When you
hire a dj entertainer for your wedding reception, it seems as though you are only hiring them for a
time block of 4-8 hours. Any professional dj with experience knows that you have to put in many
hours  of preparation to provide an exceptional experience for the bride and groom. The
Music Express experience creates memories that last a lifetime because of the thorough
preparation that is involved.

Personal consultation(s) (2-4 hours) – In order to provide you with a stress free
wedding reception, it requires extensive preparation. Our consultations are some of the
most comprehensive in California. We will prepare all of your big events and
introductions for your own personal style.

Pre-Reception Coordination (1 hour) – Upon our arrival at the event location, we will
coordinate with other vendors to make sure your wedding flows smoothly just as planned.

Event Preparation, Setup, and Travel (5-10 hours) – Behind the scenes your music
will be programmed specifically for your event according to your specifications, the equipment
will  be checked, and equipment will be loaded. Equipment is usually set up an hour to two
hours before the reception. The microphones sound, and lights are checked to make sure
everything is perfect for the arrival of your first guest.

On site assistant production/sound engineer (7-12 hours) – This is another dj that assists
the emcee/Master of Ceremonies. This allows the emcee to move about the reception and
focus on the family, wedding party, vendors, and guests.

Event performance (4-8 hours) – This is what you have been looking forward to for a long
time. From the beginning of your wedding to the end of the evening, Music Express will create
lasting memories for you to remember for the rest of your life. You can see that the work begins
long before the actual day of your wedding.

Total Time – (19 to 35 hours) - In order for any dj to perform at a high level for your
wedding, they must invest the right amount of time to prepare for the job.

HOW LONG HAS THE DJ BEEN DOING WEDDINGS – Experience is one of the most
important factors when hiring a dj so is the number of weddings that the djs have done in the past.
However, the most important factor is how many brides and grooms are happy with their service.
This is where testimonials are important. Video testimonials are the best because you have an
opportunity to see the bride’s and groom’s reaction first hand.

DOES THE DJ HAVE INSURANCE – Any reputable dj service will have a liability insurance
policy to protect you. This is an important question to ask the dj when you call them or meet with
them in person. Liability insurance protects you, your guests, and the venue.

HOW WILL YOU MOTIVATE OUR GUESTS TO DANCE? – The style of the dj is an important
part of you hiring the dj. If you need someone to encourage your guests to dance, then you
should ask your dj if this is part of their style.

The dj must also make the right musical selections
Is there too much light in the room (this can stop people from getting on the dance floor)
Are the bride and groom dancing (guests will dance more when the bride and groom are dancing)
Does the dj create energy through announcements?

HOW IS THE DJ DIFFERENT THAN HIS/HER COMPETITORS? – Any serious dj company will be happy to share with you what makes them unique from their competition. DJs are proud of their skills
sets, and they will be happy to share that with you along with success stories If any dj talks badly
about another company specifically, then you know right away that they are not professional.
Certainly you want to hire a professional that is going to behave in an ethical manner for the biggest
day of your life.

WILL YOU ACT AS THE EMCEE AT OUR WEDDING? – It is extremely important that your
dj is comfortable making announcements on the microphone. Professional djs are talented
emcees as well as music programmers. If your dj is not comfortable making announcements,
then you might want to consider hiring someone else. This ability will have a big impact on the
success of your wedding.

HOW CAN WE SELECT MUSIC FOR OUR EVENT? – When planning for a wedding, the dj must
coordinate with the bride and groom for the ceremony and/or reception, announcements, dinner
music, toasts, etc. Music Express has planning guides for all of this. Also, does the dj have online
planning tools? Can you look at their music library online to help you make your choices?
Music Express has online planning tools as well as lists of the most popular wedding music available
online to assist you in your planning needs.

HOW DO YOU BOOK THE DJ?  In order to secure the date, any professional company will ask
you for a deposit and a signed contract. This is required to finalize your agreement with the
dj/entertainer.

IS THERE A WRITTEN CONTRACT?  Contracts are designed to protect both parties. This
guarantees that your dj is obligated to show up at your wedding and provide you with agreed upon
services. This also outlines the duties for the dj, and the responsibilities for the bride and groom.

HOW MUCH IS THE DEPOSIT? The standard in the wedding industry is in between 40 and
50 percent of the total contract. The deposit makes your contractual agreement binding.

WHAT WILL YOUR DJ WEAR TO THE WEDDING?  This is an important question to ask your dj.
It is important to make sure that professional appropriate attire is worn to your wedding.

WHAT ABOUT LIGHTS?  Most offer some type of light show to accompany their services. Find out
what type of lights they have, and if they are included in the package price. It is also important to find
out if they will flow with the ambiance and mood of your wedding.

DO YOU BELONG TO ANY TRADE ASSOCIATIONS? Serious performers will belong to some
type of trade association. Music Express belongs to the American Association of Professional
Entertainers. Trade associations help djs to stay abreast of trends, network, and share ideas with
other performers.
